Stewards of the Sea: Heinen’s Trusted Seafood Sources
From the salty Pacific and the icy rivers of Alaska to the lush rainforest waters of Costa Rica, we are continuously reminded of the importance of natural resources, ecosystems and sustainability efforts.
No matter the destination or partner, these values are critical to us. We make sure to ask the right questions and know that this selectiveness to support best practices in the fishing and aquaculture communities will help our resources flourish for years to come.
Get to Know a Few of our Seafood Partners
Verlasso
Verlasso’s salmon farm is located so far south in the Patagonia region of Chile that it requires both a puddle-jumper plane and boat to visit. The expansive remote location of the farm gives the fish extra space to swim and prevents overcrowding. A leader focused on eco friendly solutions, Verlasso uses groundbreaking, ocean-friendly feed that contains no wild-caught feeder fish.
Rainforest Tilapia
By harnessing the power of Costa Rica’s moving falls, rivers and streams, Rainforest Tilapia can raise their fish in constantly flowing water. With a focus on sustainability, Rainforest Tilapia has a zero waste policy, runs 100% on electric energy made from renewable sources and feeds their fish a plant-based diet.
They also take pride in their traceability practices and can track the entire life history of each fish from farm to processing plant to market.
Alaskan Seafood
When you hear Alaska is the source of your seafood, you should think “sustainable!” Alaska’s state constitution includes a mandate focused on sustainable seafood; the only state to include such verbiage. As a model for the rest of the world, Alaska has dedicated itself to preservation.
- Coho Salmon – Harvested mid-June through late October, while the Alaskan ocean waters are icy cold and clear, Coho Salmon are caught by small, family-run fishing operations along the shorelines of Alaska’s Cook Inlet. Coho Salmon is part of our Direct Overnight Seafood Program.
- Copper River Salmon – Fishing on the Copper River is strictly controlled by Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game to ensure preservation of the surrounding natural environment. This approach also prevents overfishing to continually replenish the supply of wild Alaskan salmon for years to come.
We are also inspired to partner with industry leaders such as Riverence, Sixty South and many others.
Thanks to trusted sources like these, we can guarantee the freshest, high-quality catch for our customers! If you’re interested in learning more, we encourage you to visit your local Heinen’s Seafood Department to find a catch worth serving.
