Everything you Need to Know about Heinen’s Craft Beer Crowlers

The following post was written by Heinen’s wine and beer expert, Ed Thompkins.

Back in the day (around 2017 or so), there was primarily only one vessel in which to transport fresh draft beer from tap to home. The good old growler revolutionized the ability to enjoy draft beer without being at a brewery or in the Beer Department at Heinen’s. Although bulky and cumbersome to transport and keep cold, the growler was the only option for craft beer fans.

However, around that same time, many breweries began experimenting with a different container that was more user friendly. It quickly caught on in many breweries, as the aluminum 32 oz. “can” was not only more convenient, but also a far superior method for keeping draft beer fresh. The “crowler” (a name combining a “can” and “growler”) was thus born.

The crowlers filled at breweries often require a custom sealing machine to close the top. Extremely expensive to own, operate and repair, we’ve been on the hunt for another option better suited for our stores, and we’ve finally found it!

Heinen’s custom crowlers use a simple, yet effective closure that enables you to bring home the freshest craft beer you can buy! Rather than using a sealing machine, the cap itself pressurizes the 32 oz. aluminum can, which creates an environment that preserves the bubbles, freshness and, of course, the taste of the beer!

Heinen's Crowler

Check out a few other notable qualities that make our crowlers special:

  • Allows the beer to stay fresh and fizzy for at least a week, versus only a day or two with growlers.
  • Offers ease of transportation to events.
  • Non reusable but 100% recyclable
  • Eliminates the need to store empty and bulky glass growlers in between fills.
  • The perfect way to bring our delicious local beers to out-of-town beer fans.

Interested in filling a crowler for yourself? Our monthly Brewery Partner collaboration beers are the perfect excuse!

What is Heinen’s Brewery Partner Program?

Our relationships with local Ohio breweries are something that we value tremendously. By working closely with the breweries and brewers, we are able to bring you not only their usual offerings, but also beers that are created specifically for Heinen’s.

Each month, we partner with a local Ohio brewery to plan, develop and brew a beer that you can only find in our Beer Department. The beers that we create push the boundaries of style and flavor, while providing incredible taste experiences. We hope that you enjoy our beers as much as we enjoy creating them for you!

Cheers!

Heinen's Grocery Store

By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
