5 Eco Friendly Home Brands to Shop this Earth Day

The following guide was written by Heinen’s partner Alex Miles.

With this eco-forward holiday approaching on the calendar, it’s important to call special attention to brands that make a conscious effort to show extra love to our planet.

The five earth friendly brands below not only offer sustainable home products, but they make it their mission to positively impact the environment through their values and actions. Shopping these brands will help you prioritize the Earth this month – and every day in the future. Our precious planet needs your support, and we’re here to help.

As you think about how you can do your part to protect our planet, consider grabbing a few of these environmentally friendly home items during your next Heinen’s grocery haul.

Repurpose Compostable Plates

1. Repurpose – Made to Solve the Earth’s Plastic Problem
Plastic is a part of so many products, but it creates big problems for the environment. In fact, we dump about 26 billion pounds of it into the ocean each year. That’s the equivalent to 100,000 blue whales – every single year.

Desperate to find a solution for the everyday plastics consumers use and toss into the trash, the co-founders of Repurpose tapped into the powers of business, technology and design. They created Repurpose, a female-owned company with a huge vision of getting rid of plastic and making sustainability more convenient to all people, regardless of where they live, work, etc.

Their team of “eco-entrepreneurs” work together to design safe, durable alternative plant-based products, including drinkware, partyware, trash bags, paper products and more. Best of all, the products are highly durable, compostable, non-toxic and made with plants. Over the last decade, they’ve kept over 3.5 million pounds of waste out of landfills – and they’re still going! You can help them achieve even more.

Available at Heinen’s in High Heat Utensils Combo, Clear Compostable Cups, Paper Compostable Cups, Compostable Bowls, Compostable Plates, Food Scrap Bags, Tall Kitchen Bags, Compostable Straws, Compostable Forks and Compostable Spoons and Compostable Hot Cups.

2. Better Life – Better for the Home, Plant-Based Cleaning Products
Did you know that more than 70% of the Earth’s rivers and streams are polluted with chemicals from cleaning products? While so many cleaning products are bad for our bodies and bad for the planet, Better Life is just as their name suggests – better.

The brand’s natural, plant-based products are free of unhealthy dyes, synthetic fragrances, sulfates and petroleum solvents. They’re also packaged in recyclable containers and are never tested on animals. Better Life also educates their customers about ways to live more sustainably, like this article on “How to Start a Compost Bin” and “The Importance of Eco-Friendly Cleaning and How to Do It.”

With spring cleaning in full swing, you can protect yourself, your home and your environment by using clean, natural and cruelty-free cleaning products from Better Life. After all, the Earth is home to everyone and everything – it deserves our best!

Available at Heinen’s in Tub and Tile Cleaner, Toilet Cleaner, All Purpose Cleaner, Dish Soap and Dishwasher Gel.

Stasher Bags

3. Stasher – A Bold Vision to Replace Single-Use Plastic
Another brand designed to address the Earth’s plastic crisis: Stasher – the simple, reusable alternative to plastic bags. An organization founded and led by women who are, “…wired to protect our planet – for the children of this generation, and every generation to come,” Stasher has created food-safe bags that are easy to re-use again and again.

Stasher’s proprietary Pinch-Loc® seal ensures the bags remain durable and leak-free. Stasher also eliminates the need for single-use plastic bags, which is huge for keeping plastic out of oceans and landfills. Using just one Stasher bag keeps 260 single use plastic bags out of the ocean every year. Imagine the impact you and your family can have by incorporating these colorfully designed and easy to use and clean bags into your lives. YOU can make an incredible difference for protecting our planet.

Available at Heinen’s in Reusable Clear Sandwich Bag, Reusable Clear Stand-Up Bag, Reusable Clear Snack Bag, Reusable Bowls and Reusable Quart-Size Bag.

Bee's Wrap

4. Bee’s Wrap – A Buzzworthy Swap that Makes a Big Impact
Organic cotton with a blend of beeswax, plant oil and tree resin – that’s what makes up these super durable, super sustainable food storage wraps.

While they look and feel like a typical cloth – with a beautiful honeycomb design – Bee’s Wrap creates a protective, breathable seal for fruits, veggies, cheese and bread. You can rinse them after use and reuse them over time. Once the wrap loses its grip, you can compost it or use it as a natural fire starter, returning it to the Earth instead of polluting the environment. Using just one wrap can save over 1600 square ft. of plastic wrap from entering oceans and landfills.

Now that’s what we call a buzzworthy benefit!

Available at Heinen’s in Assorted Honeycomb, Sandwich Honeycomb and Medium Honeycomb.

Lunchskins Sandwich Bags

5. Lunchskins – Offering a Planet Friendly, Stylish Plastic Alternative
Founded in 2008 by Kirsten Quigley, Lunchskins isn’t your typical lunch bag. After noticing how much waste was created when she packed 20+ lunches a week for her family, she knew there had to be a better way. So, she put her environmental sciences expertise to use to create an easy, affordable and, importantly, fun alternative for consumers to incorporate it into their lives. With their recognizable bright colors and designs, Lunchskins are just that.

These self-sealing, disposable and dishwasher-safe reusable bags are durable and grease-resistant, so you can use them repeatedly. Best of all, Lunchskins gives back to the planet with every single sale. According to the Lunchskins’ website, just one bag replaces 500 plastic bags! They’re freezer safe, microwave safe and perfect for on-the-go lifestyles.

Available at Heinen’s in Navy Shark Paper Sandwich Bags, Red Apple Sandwich Bags, Green Stripe Quart-Size Paper Bags and Avocado Sandwich Bags.

Heinen's Grocery Store

By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
