When you’re in need of an easy appetizer or looking for something unique to bring to brunch, make these simple Smoked Salmon Potato Pancakes.
Before getting into the recipe, it is first important to distinguish between the potato pancake and a potato latke because while they share the same main ingredient (potatoes), they are different. While both recipes come from Europe, the potato latke was inspired by an Italian ricotta cheese pancake, while the potato pancake originated in Germany. Their texture is also different as a potato latke looks and tastes more like a hashbrown because the potatoes are roughly shredded, whereas the potato pancake offers a mashed potato-like center because the potatoes are finely grated.
Aside from being made of potatoes, the potato latke and the potato pancake are similar in that they are both time consuming to make from scratch. That’s where Heinen’s saves the day with their ready-to-fry potato pancakes in the Frozen Department. Beautifully sized, easy to cook, and packed with the same savory flavor and creamy potato texture of its scratch-made counterpart, Heinen’s frozen potato pancakes are simple, affordable, and authentic.
One of the best things about potato pancakes is the toppings! Because potato pancakes are naturally neutral in flavor, you can add any kind of sweet or savory toppings you like. This recipe features classic toppings of Crème fraîche, smoked salmon, red onion, and fresh herbs.
Made in just two simple steps with only five minutes of prep, there’s no reason not to try this recipe!

Responsibly sourced and free of preservatives, artificial flavors, and synthetic colors, each package is packed with velvety, rich, thinly sliced pieces of medium-smoked salmon that complement the neutral flavor of the potato pancake perfectly.
- You can get creative with toppings. As mentioned before, the flavor of potato pancakes is very neutral, making them the perfect vehicle any topping.
