Hush Puppies with Lemon Garlic Aioli

Classic light and fluffy hush puppies shine with a super easy homemade lemon garlic aioli sauce. You can make this recipe traditionally by frying the hush puppies, or bust out the air fryer for a slightly healthier spin.

Either way, these delicious bites are perfect for sharing!

Hush Puppies with Lemon Garlic Aioli

Ingredients

For the Hush Puppies

  • Canola oil (only if frying)
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 large Heinen's cage free egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Aioli

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. Dijon mustard
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • Pinch of salt and pepper

Instructions

Air Frying Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, egg and buttermilk. Let the batter rest in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 400˚F. Spray the basket with cooking spray. Add rounded spoonfuls of batter to the basket, making sure the basket is not overcrowded.
  3. Spray the tops of the hushpuppies with cooking spray. Cook for 8-10 minutes, until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  4. Serve with lemon garlic aioli. (See instructions below.)

Deep Frying Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, egg and buttermilk.
  2. In a large skillet, add 2 inches of canola oil and heat to 365˚F.
  3. Working in batches, drop rounded spoonfuls of batter into the oil. Cook for 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Add more canola oil if needed.
  4. Remove the hush puppies from the oil with a slotted spoon. Let the hush puppies drain on a paper towel.
  5. Serve with lemon garlic aioli. (See instructions below.)

To make the Aioli

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Set aside in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
