Heinen's Grocery Store

By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.

  1. Instead of commercial energy bars, these delicious, rich, and most satisfying healthy bites are now my go-to-snack after vigorous exercise! I followed the recipe using a natural chunky peanut butter, but no chia, 2T flaxseeds, 1 t cinnamon and did not add additional nuts. My batch yielded 11 “big” bites. The first bite was a tiny bit crumbly so I froze the rest of the batch. This seemed to eliminate the crumbly effect and the bites are easy to eat right from the freezer. I’m not a nutritionist, but I calculated the calories at roughly 170 with 7 grams of protein. These are simply wonderful!
