The following recipe and photography were provided by local blogger Carolyn Hodges of The Dinner Shift.

With its combination of crisp juicy apple, savory cheddar, herby thyme and sweet maple, this turkey burger is truly perfect for the fall season.

Folding a cup of grated fresh apple into lean ground turkey keeps these burgers very tender and prevents them from drying out. I prefer to use sweet and juicy Honeycrisp apples, but you can use your favorite variety.

Apple and cheddar is a classic combination, so be sure to check out Heinen’s Specialty Cheese Department for a wide assortment of unique cheddar to top the burgers. I used Heinen’s hand-selected Wisconsin cheddar.

Don’t skip the maple Dijon mayo! It’s so delicious and might just be my favorite part of this recipe. Refrigerate the leftovers and spread it onto turkey or ham deli sandwiches.

Ingredients

For the Turkey Burgers

  • 16 oz. 94% lean ground turkey
  • 1 cup Honeycrisp apple, grated
  • 1 Tbsp. Heinen’s organic Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp. Heinen’s dried thyme
  • ½ tsp. Heinen’s onion powder
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp. freshly cracked black pepper
  • 4 oz. Heinen’s hand-selected Wisconsin cheddar, sliced
  • 4 Heinen’s brioche buns, toasted
  • Green leaf lettuce
  • Thinly sliced apples

For the Maple Dijon Mayo

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 ½ Tbsp. Heinen’s pure organic maple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp. Heinen’s organic Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the turkey, grated apple, mustard, thyme, onion powder, salt and black pepper. Use your hands to gently fold the ingredients together until well mixed. The mixture will be wet. Shape into 4 burger patties.
  2. Heat a nonstick pan or nonstick grill pan over medium-high heat and coat with oil spray or nonstick cooking spray. Make sure the pan is very hot before adding the burgers to ensure they get a good sear and don’t stick to the pan.
  3. Cook the turkey burgers on one side for 5 minutes. Flip the burgers, reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook for 5-6 more minutes, or until the internal temperature registers 165ºF. During the last minute of cooking, top each burger with the sliced cheddar.
  4. To prepare the mayo, whisk together the mayonnaise, Dijon and maple syrup.
  5. Serve the burgers on toasted buns topped with leaf lettuce, sliced apple and the maple Dijon mayo.
