Our History

Since 1929, Heinen’s Grocery Store has been known for its exceptional quality products and world-class customer service.

Heinen’s legacy began when local butcher, Joe Heinen opened his first butcher shop in Shaker Heights, Ohio with the philosophy that “you have to find the best to sell the best.”

Joe Heinen’s entrepreneurial spirit transformed his business into Cleveland’s first supermarket, offering premium meat, produce, and dry goods—all in one convenient shopping destination. This was revolutionary in the grocery industry, but what truly set Heinen apart was his commitment to quality. Heinen’s Grocery Store continues to be a family owned and operated business, now led by the third and fourth generations.

Heinen’s consistently strives to provide a shopping experience where customers feel better when they leave than when they arrived.

Today, Heinen’s operates 19 grocery stores in Northeast Ohio and 5 in Illinois, along with two warehouses, and a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

The Third and Fourth Generation of the Heinen Family Standing in a Heinen Store

Family-Owned for Four Generations

More than 95 years later, Joe Heinen’s vision lives on under the leadership of his grandsons, Jeff and Tom Heinen and their children, Kim, Kelsey, and Jake Heinen. Together, along with Heinen’s dedicated associates, they are reimagining the traditional grocery store experience to continuously meet the needs of each customer.

Although Heinen’s is always evolving, some things never change. Heinen’s mission is to exceed standards for customer service and product assortment while reinvesting in their greatest asset; their associates. Heinen’s is proud to be Cleveland’s first and longest family-owned grocer, and looks forward to serving their Ohio and Illinois communities for years to come.
