Fresh Produce Department

Our Produce Department is built upon strong relationships with trusted local and global farmers, which allows us to offer only the finest fruits and vegetables. You’ll discover a vast and vibrant selection of premium everyday picks and exotic specialties. Whether it’s an apple or dragon fruit, Heinen’s is dedicated to providing the best in freshness and variety. Trust us to bring the farm to your table with care and quality you can taste.

We started selling produce in the 1930s. Over time we’ve developed a strict set of quality standards for appearance, taste, texture, and ripeness to ensure that every fruit and veggie you take home is fresh, delicious, and ready to be enjoyed! Our full-time Produce Inspector hand-inspects all of the produce that comes into our stores for appearance, temperature, size, sugar content, and flavor, ensuring only the best produce makes it to your table. Heinen’s Produce Department is your farmer’s market inside a grocery store!

A Wide Variety of Produce Options

At Heinen’s, you’ll find a premium assortment of everyday produce essentials from berries, bananas, and avocados, to lettuces, bell peppers, and leafy greens. We carry 400 different kinds of fruits and vegetables, including 150 USDA-certified organic produce varieties. We also source exotic produce that are normally reserved for specialty stores including mangos, lychees, dragon fruit, mushrooms, and seasonal produce like Hatch Chile Peppers.

In addition to our whole, fresh fruits and vegetables, we offer recipe-ready produce options under the Heinen’s Brand. These include diced onions, diced celery, peeled garlic, zucchini noodles, broccoli and cauliflower florets, vegetable kabobs, and more! To guarantee quality and freshness, our Recipe Ready items use the same produce we sell in our Produce Department.

Made In-House Items

At Heinen’s, we believe that fresh is best, which is why we create original made-in-house products from our high-quality grocery store fruits and grocery store vegetables. Our fresh-cut fruit, fresh squeezed juices, and fresh-ground nut butters are quintessential Heinen’s items that have been beloved for generations.

Fresh Cut Fruit

Shipped whole and monitored for peak ripeness, our fresh fruit is cut everyday by our associates to preserve quality and flavor. Available in multiple varieties and sizes, including custom fruit tray arrangements, individually cut fruit cups, and fruit medleys, our fresh-cut fruit makes a time-saving addition to parties, events, and daily meals and snacks.

Fresh Squeezed Juice

We started selling fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice in 1948. Made fresh in our stores using automatic juicers, our customers keep coming back for our Fan Favorite juice because of our limited time seasonal varieties, like winter blood orange juice, and our commitment to using only one ingredient: fresh, premium citrus.

Fresh Ground Nut Butters

We started offering fresh ground nut butters in the 1960s and we still make our nut butter in-house at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Warrensville Heights, OH to this day. With a thick, creamy texture, our fresh ground nut butters are best enjoyed in smoothies, spreads, baked goods, or right off the spoon. Like our fresh squeezed juices, quality is our focus, which is why our nut butters are made with only one ingredient: nuts.

Local and Midwest Grown Produce

A large part of what makes our Produce Department one of the best in the nation is our commitment to local and Midwest-grown produce. Our Produce Buyers take great pride in working alongside local Ohio and Illinois farms, co-ops and auctions to grow produce that is on the farm one day and in our stores the next.

In the heat of the growing season, more than 70% of our produce is sourced from local and Midwest farms! When the growing season ends and the weather turns cold, we turn our focus to our network of greenhouse growers who run state-of-the-art growing facilities in our region. By leveraging regional greenhouses, we are able to provide our customers with a wide assortment of premium, high-quality, environmentally responsible produce year-round.
